Plant a seed, save a planet

It's the smallest thing but possibly the grandest gesture you can do today...
Plant a tree seed.

It can be a pip from an apple, an acorn from an oak or a winged nut from a maple - you can even go crazy and buy a whole packet of tree seeds from your local garden centre if you want.
It doesn't really matter what tree seed you plant, so long as you plant it. And the best seeds - those with the greatest chance of growing large and living long - are seeds from trees that grow naturally where you live.

image Planting a seed is possibly the grandest gesture you can do today

But where do you plant it?

On the side of the side of the street, in your garden, in the park, on the side of a field or next to a wood... anywhere where there's space and light.

Why it matters

Trees and forests provide habitats to diverse animal species, and they also form the source of livelihood for lots of people as well. They offer timber and non-timber products, and various recreational options. They prevent soil erosion, help in maintaining the water cycle, and help check global warming by using carbon dioxide in photosynthesis.

Yet we are losing them.

But it's not just the trees we are losing. The entire ecosystem begins to come apart, with dire consequences for all of us. Thus, it is quite scary that over the past 50 years, about half the world's original forest cover has been lost, the most significant cause for that being humans beings' unsystematic use of its resources.

Take action

Make a personal commitment now and pledge to plant a tree seed

It really is that simple! Here's what you do:

Put down that keyboard
Pick up that seed
Take your finger
Go save your only planet.

That's it. You've taken a step, an action, that helps our only planet - the planet we depend on and cling to - breathe a little easier (quite literally).

'Mr. Prime Minister, Protect Masjid Al-Aqsa'

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has visited the Al Haram Al-Sharif complex during the second day of his Middle East tour. He was welcomed at the complex where former the Egyptian Minister Ahmed Tahir was killed in a Palestinian attack two years ago.

Islam Association Director Adnan Hussein and Masjid Al-Aqsa officials have presented a Koran to Prime Minister Erdogan.

Attention was also drawn to the Israeli guards at the complex where any non-Muslims are forbidden to enter.

A Palestinian, approached the Prime Minister, and said, "Please, protect the masjid." Erdogan spoke with local children who chanted slogans and made the V-sign for victory.

Erdogan later visited and prayed at Masjid Al-Aqsa and Qubbet Al-Sahra where it is believed that the Prophet Mohammed ascended into the sky.

The complex's foundation Chief Abdilazim Selah told Erdogan, "Your visit here has given us strength and drive. Here is not only a dome but also the symbol of our religion; it is a part of our belief. We cannot budge even a centimeter from this site or hand it over to others, we cannot divide and separate."

Foundation Director Adnan Hussein also said, "Aqsa Mosque will be protected until doomsday. It is the duty of all Muslims to protect this site."

Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Book 55

Narrated Abu Dhar:

I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Which mosque was first built on the surface of the earth?" He said, "Al-Masjid-ul-,Haram (in Mecca)." I said, "Which was built next?" He replied "The mosque of Al-Aqsa ( in Jerusalem) ." I said, "What was the period of construction between the two?" He said, "Forty years." He added, "Wherever (you may be, and) the prayer time becomes due, perform the prayer there, for the best thing is to do so (i.e. to offer the prayers in time)."

China Mobile and Ericsson join together to enhance communications in Inner Mongolia.

By combining wind and solar power, China Mobile and Ericsson are able to deliver reliable and stable network coverage in one of the most remote environments in the world. The region of Inner Mongolia spans an area of 1 180 000 sq km. Larger settlements in the area have enjoyed a well-established mobile network for some time, but until China Mobile set up a telecommunications tower in 2006, people in rural areas had little connection to the outside world. China Mobile sought to increase its coverage in Inner Mongolia further but expansion was proving to be expensive, particularly in rural areas. With significant investment at stake, the operator needed a solution which would be future-proof and adaptable to the region’s unique demands.

In order to reach areas without electricity, China Mobile selected Ericsson’s power efficient radio base stations as part of a combined wind-solar solution. China Mobile now has over 6400 operational 2202, 2206 and 2302 Radio Base Stations at 250 sites. As a result, people in rural areas are experiencing reliable voice and data services for the first time. For the inhabitants of the Inner Mongolian plains, who live the nomadic life of the traditional herdsman, connectivity has made their lives easier in very simple ways. Daphne Zhu, Market Communications Manager, Ericsson underlines the benefits: “This project is fairly unique in that we are serving people in areas which have no history of telecommunications at all, fixed-line or mobile. The herdsmen are now able to stay in contact with their neighbors which makes keeping track of their herds much easier. It is a great example of our philosophy of communication for all.”

Inner Mongolia covers a vast area with a wide range of landscapes so one blanket solution was not a viable option. With the wind-solar approach a scientific calculation can be used to determine the ratio of wind to solar at each site and the solution can be adapted accordingly. Although the initial investment is higher than a conventional diesel powered site, with an altitude of more than 1000 km and plenty of wind and sunshine, the combined power solution is extremely effective for this region. In the long-term this implementation will lower opex for the operator by cutting site maintenance visits as refuelling is not needed. Also as the technology becomes more commonplace it is envisaged that the initial construction costs will decrease. For China Mobile, the project has opened up a whole new group of subscribers and the low environmental impact of the solution boosts its credentials as a sustainable organization.

Li Li, Deputy General Manager, China Mobile explains: “To expand our network and increase subscriber numbers we needed to overcome the lack of electricity in rural areas and find a solution which was independent of the power grid. The collaboration with Ericsson has helped us to meet our objectives and the resulting wind-solar deployment takes advantage of the natural situation here. It also gives us the competitive advantage of being the first to market in the region.”

Mediterranean bluefin tuna is on the brink of commercial and biological collapse, driven by the uncontrolled demand for its high quality meat for sushi around the world.

image The root cause lies in decades of mismanagement. But the solution is now in the hands of restaurant owners, chefs, retailers and consumers, like you, to bring this magnificent species back from the brink.

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) has been responsible for the management of Mediterranean bluefin tuna for more than 40 years. But, its quota system has failed, and the species is now threatened by illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, and a dramatic overcapacity of fishing fleets.

If the current situation continues then time will soon run out for this amazing creature.

The loss of Mediterranean bluefin tuna would be an economic and ecological disaster. WWF has time and again urged the adoption of a management plan based on advice from international scientists. But with ICCAT choosing not to listen, WWF is now calling for a moratorium – to regain control over the fishery and allow stocks to recover – and the boycott of the species by consumers, retailers, chefs and restaurants.

2008 is a crucial year for Mediterranean tuna. ICCAT will be meeting in November and it will be one of the last chances to save this vulnerable species.

imageTake action
There is still time to save Mediterranean bluefin tuna from extinction. WWF needs your help to show ICCAT and political leaders that this madness must stop now.

Please add your voice and pledge to boycott Mediterranean bluefin tuna – until a recovery plan is put in place for the species based on scientific advice.

Find out how you can avoid bluefin tuna from the Mediterranean by visiting our simple guide

The European Union (EU) is about to decide its response to global warming – the decision will affect all of us.

Europe has long stated its aim to limit global warming to 2°C above the pre-industrial average. If we allow temperatures to exceed this threshold, we face the prospect run-away and catastrophic climate change.

It's time for Europe to show leadership in addressing climate change |

Scientists are already predicting an ice-free Arctic in summer months, possibly before the end of the current decade. In addition, warming would threaten around 1 billion people with problems of water scarcity, and would place as many as 30% of all plant and animal species at a high risk of extinction.

The decisions the EU is making will set the level of ambition for future international negotiations, where world leaders will come together to agree a long-term solution to climate change. No matter where we live, we all need Europe to show leadership in tackling climate change.

Let European leaders know that it’s time for them to lead

Developed countries like those in the EU have the greatest responsibility for emitting the climate-changing gasses which cause global warming as they began pumping carbon dioxide and other ‘greenhouse gasses’ much earlier than most other countries. In addition, as one of the world’s largest trading blocks, the EU remains responsible for high per capita emissions, and has huge influence on the emissions of other countries through international trade and investment.

Take action

The EU is currently debating laws which aim to cut emissions across Europe by 20% by 2020. The problem is that the proposed cuts are nowhere near sufficient to account for Europe’s responsibility in addressing climate change. If other developed countries followed this lead, we would not make the cuts we need globally.

Europe needs to commit to cut its emissions of greenhouse gasses at home by at least 30%, as well as providing help for poorer countries to cut their emissions by moving to low-carbon development.

Take action now and urge the EU to show leadership in addressing climate change and contributing its fair share of the solution
